Book review: We were liars - E. Lockhart
Happy new year everyone! It's been a while since I last posted something here and I'm sorry for that but I wasn't really in the mood to write anything. However, the new year gave me loads of motivation to regularly post something (but I can't and won't promise it, we will see). I hope you had a great start into the new year and are full of joy for this new decade. One of my resolutions for this year is to read more and especially more on a regular basis (instead of using my phone or watching Netflix & co.). That is kind of the reason why I am starting this year with a book recommendation for you.
The book I want to introduce you is called "We were liars" and was written in 2014 by the author E. Lockhart. It is an award-winning young adult novel and many critics consider it as a classic for teenagers to read. I bought it on a trip to London a long time ago when I wasn't even able to really read and understand it but I just wanted to buy a book as a souvenir of that vacation. However, I didn't know until now that the book was so popular and celebrated and I did choose it only by its title and cover. I am quite happy I did buy it because it's a great book. But before I get deeper into my own opinion, I want to give you guys the blurb and some information on the book.
"We are liars. We are beautiful and privileged. We are cracked and broken. A tale of love and romance. A tale of tragedy. Which are lies? Which is truth? You decide."
I quite love the blurb because it doesn't reveal much of the content of the book but it makes you super curious. Also, it gives me some "Pretty little liars" and "Gossip Girl" vibes which might be a possible reason for why I chose it. But let me give a quick résumé of the content of the book: Cadence is an American teenage girl that comes from a rich family. She spends her summer break with her family on the private island they own. Being a rich teenage girl, it is obvious that she is confronted with the beliefs and preconceptions of her family. The reader quickly discovers that two summers ago an accident happened and Cadence took physical and mental damage from it. Cadence doesn't remember at all what happened and no one of her family members tells her something. It is not until the end that she and the reader discover the truth.
I tried give you a bit of an overview of the content without revealing too much. What you can expect of this book is that the suspense is held right until the end of the book and the writing style of the author is really great. It catches the reader and you can easily sympathize with the main character. If you're looking for an exciting and moving book this is one for you! Due to the great writing style of the author I might read something else of her work.
I hope I could give you a good overview of the book and that it might make it into your "to be read"-list. I hope you're having an amazing Sunday and maybe we'll see each other (virtually of course) very soon. Until then!
